AMD plans FSR 4.1 for Xbox consoles and handhelds, with no launch date yet

AMD is expanding its game upscaling technology across Xbox and PC hardware. Some Radeon and Ryzen devices can get it now, while Xbox owners must wait.

AMD announced on 20 October that its FSR 4.1 game upscaling technology is coming to Xbox Series X and Series S consoles and Xbox Ally handhelds. The expansion could give developers another way to balance image quality and performance on those devices, but AMD and Microsoft have not given a date for its arrival on Xbox consoles.

Engadget identifies the Ally X, Ally X20 and Ally S among the handhelds in the announcement. The Verge also identifies Xbox Ally X devices. The reports describe Xbox console support as ‘coming soon’; Engadget says a video suggests an Ally X rollout before the end of the year, but that suggestion is not a confirmed release date.

How FSR 4.1 could affect Xbox games

FidelityFX Super Resolution renders a game at a lower resolution to reduce the work required of the hardware, then uses machine learning to produce a sharper image, Engadget explains. That trade-off may matter most on less powerful devices such as the Series S and smaller Ally models. Neither report provides Xbox benchmarks establishing a specific performance or image-quality gain.

Xbox chief technology officer Scott Van Vilet said Microsoft had worked closely with AMD to optimize the technology, calling it another tool for developers seeking performance and visual quality. The Verge also quoted him pointing to further joint work on Project Helix using FSR Diamond. Those remarks describe plans beyond the current FSR 4.1 expansion, rather than a date for its release.

Which PC devices get FSR 4.1 now

The Xbox plan comes alongside an immediate PC rollout. The Verge reports that Radeon RX 6000-series graphics cards and devices using Ryzen AI Max 300 and 400 series or Ryzen AI 9 300 and 400 series processors can get FSR 4.1 through AMD's Adrenalin Edition 26.10.1 drivers. That separates hardware gaining access now from Xbox consoles still awaiting support.

AMD introduced FSR 4.1 for Radeon RX 9000-series graphics cards in March and had promised to extend it to older GPUs and handhelds this year, according to The Verge. The outlet says the technology can improve performance in more than 300 supported games, including Cyberpunk 2077, Battlefield 6 and Assassin’s Creed Shadows. AMD executive Jack Huynh said the company retuned the model and optimized its code path for the wider rollout.
