Ben Stokes heads to Adelaide after Durham title as county plans remain open

Ben Stokes will play for Adelaide Strikers in Australia's Big Bash League after finishing the 2026 English county season with Durham, BBC Sport reported on 30 September. The former England captain is available for Adelaide's full campaign, but his plans for Durham next summer have yet to be agreed publicly. That leaves county supporters with a clear next destination for Stokes and an open question about his longer-term role.

The Adelaide signing was announced on 1 September. It is the one confirmed playing commitment beyond Durham's season identified in BBC Sport's account of Stokes's next steps. The Strikers list their first match, against Sydney Thunder at Manuka Oval, for 16 December; the fixture is scheduled, and no result or role for Stokes in that match can yet be reported.

What Stokes has agreed with Adelaide Strikers

Adelaide Strikers said Stokes had signed for BBL|16 and would be available throughout the campaign. Stokes said he was excited to join the club, called Adelaide Oval an incredible place to play and said he wanted to contribute to a successful season. Head coach Tim Paine described him as a proven match-winner and said the Strikers were thrilled to add him to their squad.

The move marks a return to Australia's domestic Twenty20 competition: ABC News reported that Stokes previously played in the Big Bash for Melbourne Renegades in 2015. BBC Sport said his most recent match in the shorter format was for Northern Superchargers in The Hundred in 2024. His One-Day Cup appearances for Durham this summer were also his first 50-over cricket since the 2023 World Cup, according to the BBC.

How Stokes finished the county season with Durham

Stokes's immediate move follows a substantial return to Durham cricket. BBC Sport reported that he played all 10 of the county's One-Day Cup matches and four of its final six County Championship games. Durham won the Division Two title by 47 points without losing a Championship match, giving Stokes a successful county finish after his departure from international cricket.

His contributions came in both disciplines. BBC Sport recorded an unbeaten 108 against Derbyshire in the One-Day Cup. In the Championship, it said he scored four half-centuries in 10 innings, averaging 47.88, and took 25 wickets at 20.36. His bowling included 5-17 against Derbyshire and 6-94 from 31.3 overs against Worcestershire. Durham had secured the title before the Worcestershire match.

The season also gave Stokes an extended period with the county after years of England commitments. In its 30 September report, BBC Sport said he would be without an England central contract for the first time since 2014. The available account does not set out the precise end date or terms of that contract, so the contract position is the BBC's reported description rather than a newly announced agreement.

What Durham has said about next summer

Campbell, who has moved from head coach to director of cricket at Durham, told BBC Sport before his new role was announced that he expected Stokes to want to keep playing for the county, particularly in red-ball cricket. Asked whether Stokes was committed to Durham, Campbell said, ‘Yes, I do, I honestly do,’ and described him as ‘all-in’ for at least the next couple of years. That is Campbell's assessment, not an announced contract for 2027.

Campbell said Stokes had discussed adapting his bowling run-up for county cricket and where he wanted to bat. Those conversations point to interest in continued county play, but BBC Sport reported that Campbell and Stokes still needed to discuss what next summer would look like. No completed agreement about Stokes's Durham schedule next year was reported.

Why other franchise plans remain uncertain

The Adelaide agreement does not settle whether Stokes will take up other opportunities outside county cricket. Campbell told the BBC that Stokes would need to choose carefully where he played, how long he stayed and how many matches he accepted. He also noted the challenge of returning to Twenty20 after a lengthy gap. Those remarks describe decisions ahead, not additional signings.

BBC Sport set out possible franchise competitions beyond the Big Bash, alongside eligibility and scheduling complications. It reported no confirmed commitment to another league. For now, Adelaide is the announced next engagement, while talks with Durham will determine how much county cricket Stokes plays after the winter.

Stokes's shift in focus follows the end of his England career. The England and Wales Cricket Board announced on 28 June that he would retire as Test captain and from international cricket at the conclusion of the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge. He had captained the Test side since April 2022. His Big Bash signing and Durham performances show where he has continued playing, but his longer-term balance between county and franchise cricket remains to be decided publicly.
