Former Port Adelaide forward Daniel Stewart died on Friday, 23 October, aged 37, the club said in a statement reported by The Guardian. His death has prompted the Australian Football League club to offer support to former teammates and plan a tribute at Adelaide Oval next season.

Port Adelaide described the news as a shock. The club has not given a cause of death, and its statement asked that Stewart’s family be given privacy.

Port Adelaide’s tribute to Daniel Stewart

Chief executive Matthew Richardson extended the club’s condolences to Stewart’s family, including his parents Donna and Byron, wife Laura, sons Bernie and Lando, and brother Leigh. He also named Stewart’s close friend and former teammate Matt Thomas, as well as people who knew him at North Adelaide and Labrador.

“Daniel was part of the Port Adelaide football family, and he always will be,” Richardson said. He said the club would support people affected by Stewart’s death, including former teammates and those who worked alongside him. Port Adelaide plans to wear black armbands at its first home game at Adelaide Oval in 2027.

Former teammate Kane Cornes called Stewart “a brilliant and caring teammate who always had a smile on his face”, according to The Guardian. Cornes also expressed sympathy for Stewart’s family and recalled his friendship with Thomas.

Stewart’s playing career at Port Adelaide

The 200cm key forward played 36 AFL matches and kicked 31 goals for Port Adelaide between 2010 and 2013. The Power selected him with pick No 35 in the 2009 rookie draft after he played for North Adelaide in the SANFL. Earlier in his career he had come through the Eastern Ranges and Queensland club Labrador.

Stewart joined Port Adelaide’s senior list at the end of 2009 and made his AFL debut against Geelong in round four the following season. In Port Adelaide’s final game of 2010, he kicked a career-high four goals against Richmond, including two in the last term, as the Power held on for the win.
