Earlier US-China agreements remain a work in progress

The U.S. and China have made uneven progress on trade commitments since their leaders met in May. U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping are meeting in Washington this week. Analysts expect modest progress but no major breakthroughs. The two countries are discussing reciprocal tariff reductions. But disagreements remain over the scope of this initiative. China has yet to fulfill its promise to buy 200 Boeing planes.

And cooperation on artificial intelligence is hindered by competition between the two countries. An agreement to form a Board of Investment faces challenges because of concerns on both sides over China building factories in the U.S. Xi's visit begins on Wednesday.
