EU chief von der Leyen invites Canada to become first associate member of bloc

European Union chief Ursula von der Leyen made a significant invitation on Wednesday, saying she was taking the steps to welcome Canada as the EU’s first ever associate member. As relations between both the EU and Canada have come under strain during the Trump presidency, European leaders and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney have been taking steps to deepen the friendship between Canada and the EU.
