EV motorbikes power a cleaner future for Kenya's Maasai Mara

Electric motorcycles are bringing Africa’s energy transition into Kenya’s Maasai Mara game reserve, where rangers are using solar-charged bikes to patrol wildlife areas more quietly, and to pursue suspected poachers. Safari operators also are converting vehicles and expanding solar charging systems to cut fuel and maintenance costs.

The experiment is expanding beyond individual camps, with sustainability company Era Lab supporting 25 lodges across East Africa as operators test whether clean mobility can be scaled up in remote conservation areas. The market extends beyond conservation. Communities near wildlife areas often rely on motorcycles for transport, especially where roads are poor and alternatives are limited.
