Japan's former Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda dies at 90
Former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, who was an active proponent of better ties with China, has died. Officials from his Liberal Democratic Party say he died on Monday, without giving details. He was 90. Born in 1936, Fukuda grew up in a political family in Gunma. He was first elected to parliament in 1990 to succeed his father Takeo Fukuda, who also was a prime minister who worked to build Tokyo’s ties with Beijing.
Fukuda served as prime minister for just one year in 2007-2008, but after his retirement from parliament in 2012 he spent years working to improve Japan’s relations with China.
