John Wilson mines the mundane for 'The History of Concrete'

In a blockbuster movie world, John Wilson is carving out an idiosyncratic niche of his own. A year ago, he opened the Low Cinema in the New York borough of Queens. It’s a 42-seat micro-theater far off the Ticketmaster map. Wilson programs just about anything. Moviegoers keep turning up. “The History of Concrete” is Wilson’s feature film debut. It's about concrete, sure, but takes Wilson's trademark digressions. Over the weekend, it grossed a remarkable $90,000 at a single Manhattan theater.

Despite, or maybe because of Wilson’s resistance to Hollywood's prevailing wisdom, he has grown an entirely organic, authentic and highly personal micro-revolution in movies.
