A committee exploring a joint Lake Placid–New York City bid for the 2042 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games met for the first time in Manhattan on October 19, Reuters reported. The meeting moves the proposal into committee work, but New York has not committed to a formal bid.

The state formed the committee in June to examine whether the two locations could host the Games. Its work is expected to take about a year and end with findings and recommendations for state leaders, according to the governor’s office. The review covers existing venues, sustainability, fiscal responsibility and community engagement.

Transport and housing challenges for a 2042 bid

Olympic Regional Development Authority Chair Ashley Walden told Reuters that transport would be one of the biggest challenges. There is no high-speed rail connection between New York City and Lake Placid. Walden said improving transport could also meet a long-term need beyond the Games.

Walden pointed to the 2026 Milano Cortina Games, whose events were spread across northern Italy, as an example of organizers working across distant venues without high-speed rail between them. Housing in New York’s North Country, where Lake Placid is located, is another potential challenge identified in the Reuters report.

Governor Kathy Hochul told committee members that planning could spur demand for more hotels, restaurants and housing in the North Country. She said she would focus on bringing new energy to the region. The committee has yet to produce a transport or housing plan.

What Lake Placid and New York bring to the proposal

Lake Placid hosted the Winter Games in 1932 and 1980. The governor’s office says more than $750 million in state investment has modernized its Olympic venues. New York City offers an array of arenas, Reuters reported, but its earlier attempt to win the 2012 Summer Games faltered after plans for a West Side Stadium failed; London ultimately hosted those Games.

The exploratory committee includes Laura Pegula, whose family owns the Buffalo Bills, and state Assembly member Robert Carroll. Andrew Weibrecht, a two-time Olympic Super-G medallist and co-chair of the committee’s Games Operations Subcommittee, told Reuters that pairing Lake Placid’s established venues with a large city could help inspire another generation of American winter sports athletes.
