Marcos Morau is creating a David Bowie-inspired dance production, Subject to Change, that will rework the musician’s songs with choral voices. The show is planned to premiere in Luxembourg in 2028 before visiting London and Tokyo, giving audiences a new stage interpretation of Bowie’s changing identities and music.

Sadler’s Wells identifies Bunkamura, Sadler’s Wells and Morau’s company La Veronal as the production partners. Its listing schedules a premiere in March 2028 and an international tour. The Guardian reports more specific plans: a Sadler’s Wells run in London in autumn 2028, followed by a Tokyo visit in 2029.

How Subject to Change will use Bowie’s music

Morau is drawing on Bowie’s transformations into figures including Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane and the Thin White Duke. The Spanish choreographer described Bowie as having ‘practised a form of artistic reincarnation’, according to The Guardian. The production’s focus is the relationship between those changing personas, the performer’s voice and the body on stage.

The score will combine Bowie’s songs and original vocals with choral sounds from different parts of the world and the voice of Spanish singer María Arnal, Sadler’s Wells says. Alex Röser Vatiché and Ben Meerwein of O ZCUR are credited with sound design and musical direction; Max Glaenzel will design the set and Sylvia Delagneau the costumes.

‘I’m not interested in reproducing Bowie or creating a nostalgic tribute,’ Morau told The Guardian. He said he wanted to explore what happens when the songs move beyond Bowie’s familiar voice into other voices, cultures and generations. By bringing different choral traditions into the work, he hopes to turn an individual performance into a collective experience.

A tour planned through 2029

The Guardian says the Luxembourg premiere will precede the London engagement, while Sadler’s Wells gives March 2028 as the premiere month. The announced stops extend into 2029 with Tokyo. Specific performance dates for those later engagements have not been announced in the production listing.
