OpenAI and Google said on 21 October 2026 that OpenAI’s frontier AI models and Codex coding agent would become available through Google Cloud in the coming weeks, Reuters reported. The arrangement would give business customers another cloud channel for buying OpenAI tools, including through existing Google Cloud spending commitments.

OpenAI’s latest models, including GPT-6 Astra, are slated for Google Cloud’s Model Garden. Reuters reported that customers would be able to purchase them through Google Cloud Marketplace and apply spending commitments they already have with the cloud provider. The companies gave no exact launch date beyond the coming weeks.

How customers would use OpenAI models on Google Cloud

For customers in regulated industries, the proposed offering would provide access to OpenAI models alongside Google Cloud’s access controls, data governance tools and infrastructure for building AI agent workflows, according to Reuters. Those controls matter to organisations that must manage who can use a model and how data is handled as they build applications around it.

Google Cloud describes Model Garden as a place to discover and use foundation models from Google and third parties. Adding OpenAI’s models would extend that choice for developers and businesses already using Google Cloud, while giving OpenAI another route to enterprise buyers.

OpenAI’s widening cloud distribution

The move follows the end in April of OpenAI’s exclusive distribution arrangement with Microsoft, Reuters reported. OpenAI has since expanded model distribution through Amazon Web Services. Google Cloud would become another major provider offering its models to customers, even as Google and OpenAI compete in AI products and search.

The companies already had a different cloud relationship: Google Cloud previously agreed to provide OpenAI with additional computing capacity, according to Reuters. The new arrangement concerns distribution to Google Cloud customers rather than that earlier supply of computing resources.

For Google Cloud, the planned addition fits its strategy of offering models from multiple providers. Google Cloud chief executive Thomas Kurian previously told Reuters that the platform welcomes models popular with developers. Cloud providers can also earn a share of sales made through their platforms, giving them a commercial reason to carry models made by competing AI companies.
