Paris FC came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Arsenal in the Women’s Champions League at Stade Jean Bouin in Paris on Wednesday, 30 September. Clara Mateo pulled one goal back before Maeline Mendy converted an 87th-minute penalty, giving Paris its first point of this season’s league phase and denying Arsenal a second win.

Alessia Russo had put Arsenal ahead before half-time and Georgia Stanway doubled the lead shortly after the restart. The two accounts agree on the scorer and Arsenal’s 2-0 lead, although their minute markings differ.

Mateo and Mendy complete the Paris FC comeback

Paris cut the deficit in the 72nd minute. Viens played Mateo through, and the Paris captain went past Rodríguez before scoring into an empty net. The Guardian reports that Arsenal centre-backs Lotte Wubben-Moy and Williamson had both moved towards Viens, leaving Mateo space to run into. With the score at 2-1, the hosts had a route back into the match.

The equaliser followed an unusual goal-kick sequence. According to The Guardian, Rodríguez rolled the ball into play and passed it to Williamson, who stopped it with her hand. The referee judged that the goal-kick had already been taken and awarded Paris a penalty. Sports.fr independently described a misunderstanding between the goalkeeper and defender, with Williamson picking up the ball after Rodríguez’s pass.

The Guardian says video assistant referees did not intervene. Mendy, who had come on during the second half, took the penalty and scored in the 87th minute. Sports.fr’s live account also records the spot-kick and the 2-2 score. The decisive ruling was the referee’s judgment that play had restarted before Williamson handled the ball.

Arsenal pushed again after conceding, according to Sports.fr’s live account. It recorded a late header from Frida Maanum that Paris goalkeeper Chiamaka Chavas saved, as well as a Paris counterattack in added time. Neither side scored again, leaving the teams with a point apiece after Paris had trailed by two.

What the draw means for each team

UEFA’s preview says Paris eliminated Arsenal on penalties after a 3-3 draw in the 2023/24 qualifying round, their only meeting before Wednesday’s game. This latest encounter again ended level, although it took place in the league phase and followed a very different scoring sequence.
