Police in Congo break up opposition rally against constitutional changes

Police in Congo have broken up opposition protests using tear gas against hundreds of demonstrators. The protests, organized by the opposition coalition C64, were held on Tuesday in Kinshasa and other cities. Protesters opposed constitutional changes that could allow President Felix Tshisekedi to seek a third term. The protest in Kinshasa started peacefully but was dispersed by police after clashes with pro-government supporters. Opposition leader Martin Fayulu claimed police fired at them.

Congo faces multiple crises, including an Ebola outbreak and conflict with M23 rebels. Tshisekedi has been in office since 2019 and is due to complete his second term in 2028.
