Telegraph Media Group began a formal redundancy consultation in the UK on Friday, 23 October, as owner Axel Springer outlined plans to reshape the publisher around technology and international growth. Staff had been told of potential job losses on Thursday and Friday, according to the Guardian; the company has not confirmed how many roles are at risk.

The Guardian reported that newsroom insiders expected as many as 100 people to lose their jobs. That figure is an estimate from staff sources, rather than a confirmed company total. Some employees were told on Thursday, 22 October, while others received calls or emails on Friday, the Guardian reported.

A Telegraph Media Group spokesperson told the Guardian that Friday marked the start of the formal consultation and described the decisions as necessary for the future of the business. The staff email from chief executive Carolin Hulshoff Pol and editor Chris Evans did not specify a number of cuts, according to The National, which attributed its account of the email to Bloomberg News.

How the Telegraph plans to reorganise

Pol told staff the ambition was to turn the Telegraph into a global, ‘AI-powered premium media and intelligence business’. She said the company would make greater use of technology, data and AI, while changing its organisation and how it makes decisions. Her stated aim was to use AI alongside the editorial judgment and originality on which the publisher relies.

The proposed commercial expansion spans video, audio, puzzles, events, business-to-business services, licensing, commerce and other products, Pol said. She also identified foreign affairs, defence and business as areas for international audience growth. These plans put the consultation within a wider change to the Telegraph’s editorial and commercial operations.

Evans told staff at Friday’s meeting that the company planned to merge its comment and analysis teams and combine features and lifestyle workers, The National reported. The Guardian said culture and sports departments had been particularly hard hit, citing newsroom insiders. The consultation’s outcome will determine the final impact on staff.

Axel Springer’s investment pledge and the takeover

Axel Springer acquired Telegraph Media Group for £575 million in June, according to The National. The purchase followed an April move involving a call option held by RedBird IMI; changes in UK law had required RedBird IMI to find a new buyer for the Telegraph titles. Axel Springer pledged investment to grow the business and make it a leading centre-right media outlet in the English-speaking world.

The start of the consultation follows earlier expectations of cuts at the Telegraph. Our earlier report covered the prospect of newsroom job losses under the new owner; the change now is that staff have received notices and the company has formally begun consulting on redundancies.
