Tirupati records heavy rain as low-pressure area forms off Tamil Nadu coast
Tada recorded 109.8 mm of rain in a day as forecasters warned of further rain and strong winds in parts of Andhra Pradesh.
Tirupati district in India’s Andhra Pradesh received heavy rain in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 a.m. on October 21, as a low-pressure area formed off the neighbouring Tamil Nadu coast, The Hindu reported. Meteorological authorities forecast further rain and strong winds in parts of Andhra Pradesh, affecting coastal communities and fishermen later in the week.
Tada recorded 109.8 mm of rain, Satyavedu 85.4 mm and Tirupati Aero 76.4 mm during that 24-hour period, according to figures from the Meteorological Centre in Amaravati reported by The Hindu. The district average was 49.5 mm, more than eight times its normal rainfall for the day.
Rain and wind forecast for Andhra Pradesh
The India Meteorological Department said the low-pressure area formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal off the Tamil Nadu coast at 5:30 a.m. on October 21, The Hindu reported. The Amaravati centre forecast thunderstorms with lightning at isolated places in Prakasam, Nellore and parts of Rayalaseema on Thursday, extending to most northern coastal districts, Prakasam, Nellore and most of Rayalaseema on Friday.
Strong winds of 30 to 40 km/h, with gusts reaching 50 km/h, were forecast at isolated places across Andhra Pradesh through Saturday morning. The centre also forecast isolated light to moderate rain through October 27, becoming scattered across coastal districts that day.
A second Bay of Bengal system is forecast
A separate circulation over the Gulf of Thailand had emerged into the north Andaman Sea, the Visakhapatnam Cyclone Warning Centre said. It forecast another low-pressure area around October 23 over the southeast and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal. That forecast concerns a second system, distinct from the low-pressure area already reported off Tamil Nadu.
P.L.N. Murthy, head of the Visakhapatnam Cyclone Warning Centre, said Visakhapatnam would receive rain around October 27, possibly starting on the evening of October 26, according to The Hindu. Prakhar Jain, managing director of the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority, said heavy rain was likely in coastal Andhra Pradesh next week. He advised fishermen against going to sea from Sunday and urged those already at sea to return before then.
Despite Tirupati’s heavy rain, Andhra Pradesh received 47.3 mm from October 1 to 21 against a normal 111.7 mm, a 58% deficit, the Amaravati centre said, according to The Hindu. Only Tirupati, Chittoor and Annamayya districts received more than their normal rainfall over that period.
