US lifts sanctions against Eritrea's ruling party and military

The United States has lifted sanctions against Eritrea’s ruling party and military, according to the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The Biden administration imposed the sanctions in 2021 due to humanitarian and human rights concerns in Ethiopia’s Tigray region. Eritrean forces supported Ethiopian troops in the conflict, which ended with a peace accord in November 2022.

The Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control announced Friday that it removed sanctions against some Eritrean individuals and the state-owned Red Sea Trading Corporation. Eritrean Information Minister Yemane Gebremeskel welcomed the move, calling the sanctions unwarranted.
