West Indies post record 405, but Gill’s 223 carries India to eight-wicket win

Shubman Gill scored an unbeaten 223 as India chased West Indies’ record one-day international total of 405-7 in Guwahati on 30 September 2026. India reached 406-2 in 43.3 overs to win the second ODI by eight wickets, turning West Indies’ highest score in the format into a defeat and taking a 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Jayden Seales eventually dismissed Rohit lbw for 101, but the opening pair had already provided most of the runs needed. Virat Kohli made 29 before Ruturaj Gaikwad joined Gill to finish the chase.

Gill reached 200 from 117 balls and ended unbeaten on a career-best 223 from 133. His innings included 26 fours and eight sixes. BBC Sport said the 223 was the third-highest individual score in men’s ODIs; Hindustan Times reported it was the highest by an ODI captain.

India needed 406 to win and got there with 39 balls unused. Hindustan Times described the pursuit as the second-highest successful chase in men’s ODI history. The Mumbai Indians match report counted five centuries across the two innings, the most in an ODI match, and 811 runs in all.

What the result means for the series

The result followed India’s eight-wicket win in the first ODI on 27 September. In that match, Gill made 110 and Kohli finished unbeaten on 139 as India chased 296, according to the International Cricket Council. Hindustan Times reported that the Guwahati victory put India 2-0 ahead in the three-match series.
