Brett Morgen’s immersive David Bowie concert experience Stage will have its world premiere at Berlin’s Uber Arena on 14 February 2027 during the 77th Berlinale, Deadline reported after the festival’s announcement. The presentation gives audiences a new way to see footage from Bowie’s 1978 Isolar II tour on an arena scale.

The festival is scheduled to run from 10 to 21 February 2027. Deadline identified the Uber Arena as a 17,000-capacity venue, placing the premiere in the city where Bowie lived in the mid-1970s.

How Brett Morgen’s Stage uses Bowie’s 1978 footage

Deadline said Stage is designed around recently discovered and restored footage from the Isolar II tour, when Bowie performed material from Heroes. NME described the material more specifically as previously unseen 35mm film of a 1978 Earls Court concert. Morgen found the original camera negatives while working on Moonage Daydream, his documentary about Bowie, according to Deadline; The Hollywood Reporter also reported that he discovered the footage while researching that film.

The presentation uses three screens, large projections and transparent LED screens, Deadline reported. Lighting designer Patrick Woodroffe, whose credits include work with the Rolling Stones and Elton John, designed its lighting. Paul Massey created the sound mix, which Deadline said uses 7.1 surround sound and spatial audio to place the audience within the concert experience.

Who is making the David Bowie experience

Stage is a collaboration between Rob Hallett’s Wonderworld, the David Bowie Estate and Morgen, according to Deadline. NME reported that the idea of presenting the footage separately emerged in 2018 and gained momentum in 2024, when Hallett, a former AEG Live international president, joined the project. Those steps followed Morgen’s discovery of the film during work on Moonage Daydream, which premiered at Cannes in 2022.

Morgen is also scheduled to speak in the Berlinale’s European Film Market talks programme, Deadline reported.
