Thailand and Cambodia begin UN conciliation on maritime claims

Thailand and Cambodia started talks Tuesday to resolve a sea border dispute under a U.N. maritime law agreement. The area in question is believed to contain significant natural gas reserves. Cambodia initiated the process after Thailand ended a 25-year-old agreement meant to address overlapping claims, as relations between the countries worsened due to major armed clashes last year over their land border. The first meeting is taking place in Singapore from Monday to Wednesday.

Cambodia's foreign minister has called for a peaceful resolution to benefit both nations. Thailand's foreign minister has stated the previous agreement had failed to make progress and that he was seeking a fresh start.
